This covers what actually moves rankings in this specific market, which differs from generic local SEO advice in a few ways that matter.
The local pack is the whole game
For most local service searches, the map pack sits above the organic results and takes the majority of clicks. Ranking there depends heavily on Google Business Profile completeness, proximity to the searcher, review volume and recency, and category accuracy.
Proximity you cannot change. Everything else you can, and most local competitors are not.
Treat nearby places as separate markets
Residents search St. Augustine, St. Augustine Beach, Vilano Beach, World Golf Village, Nocatee and Ponte Vedra as distinct places, and often will not consider a business on the wrong side of the county. One page targeting "St. Augustine" leaves the rest on the table.
That does not mean a template with swapped names — that produces thin pages. It means writing genuinely about serving each area, which you can only do credibly for places you actually serve. See service area pages that rank.
Tourism changes search behaviour
Visitor searches are different from resident searches: shorter, more urgent, more "near me", overwhelmingly mobile, and highly seasonal. If you serve visitors, your content calendar needs to run months ahead of demand, because a page published in March will not rank for spring break that year.
Reviews carry disproportionate weight
In a market with continuous inbound migration and heavy visitor traffic, a large share of your potential customers have no local network to ask. Reviews substitute for that. Volume, recency and responses all matter, and a systematic process for asking beats occasional hope.
Competing with Jacksonville businesses
Jacksonville firms market into St. Johns County, and they often have bigger budgets. Their weakness is credibility on local specificity — they are generic about the area because they have to be. Content that demonstrates genuine local knowledge is the most reliable defence. See Jacksonville for how that market differs.
Priority order
- Google Business Profile: complete, accurate categories, real photos, correct hours including seasonal changes
- Review generation, as an actual process
- Mobile page speed
- Location pages for the areas you genuinely serve
- Service pages targeting how people actually describe what they need
- Content answering real local questions
- Citations and local links — chamber, local associations, genuine community involvement
What not to bother with
Buying directory links, keyword-stuffed footers listing thirty nearby towns, and spun city pages. They do not work now and they carry risk. The local market is small enough that doing the basics properly is sufficient to win.
